“Eat” J. Mane Gallery

I won Gold in the October competition "Eat" with the J. Mane Gallery. This is what juror, Jessica Manulis had to say about my work: "Pomegranate & Apples", by Sandra Belitza-Vazquez, is a captivating composition with the pomegranates, apples, and seed pods against a dark background. The juxtaposition of vibrant fruits against a dark backdrop creates a visually striking effect, enhancing the overall aesthetic. The use of seed pods adds an intriguing element, possibly symbolizing growth or the cycle of life.

The darkness of the background also creates a sense of mystery, drawing the viewer's attention to the details of the fruits and seed pods. The play of light and shadow in such a setting brings out textures and details in a unique way, making the image both visually appealing and conceptually rich..

Carlos Pinto and Irma Portugal made this beautiful and loving video with my photographs as an homage to Héctor Jara, a supremely talented artist, who recently flew from this world. Take a look.

This video created by Carlos Pinto and Irma Portugal uses photographs that I took of Guillermo (Memo) Labastida Quiroz at the University of the Americas in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico in the 1980s. While teaching photography in the Department of Graphic Arts and Design, I gave my students an assignment to capture multiple exposure images. Memo was one of my students and also a talented mime who volunteered to pose for the photo shoot in a silo on the University campus. The silo, completely windowless, gave us a perfectly dark background for Memo's performance. We remember and honor the wonderful life of Memo, who passed away too soon in 2019, with this heartfelt video. Enjoy!
